2011 Big Bad Wolf Adventure Race and 5K run/walk
Need a little adventure in your life? We have some adventure choices for your Labor day weekend. 5K starts at 9am and Big Bad Wolf at 8:30am.
The Big Bad Wolf Adventure Race is great race for beginners, intermediate or advanced racers. This event is excellent because you can choose how much you want to challenge yourself. For the adventurous at heart you can do the two person team event (male/male, female/female, co-ed). For those who are challenged in some areas or who want to just exceed at one leg of the race the 3 or 4 person relay may be for you.
The event has NO orienteering and is well marked. Your chance of becoming maimed, lost, or dying are very low. The first leg is about 3.4 miles of running along the majestic Riverwalk in Big Rapids Michigan. Along this route you will find black pavement under your feet, wildlife galore, and a bunch of sweaty competitors tailing, hopefully, behind you. This begins and ends at Big Rapids Middle school with a loop pattern through Northend park. This is also the same route the 5K runners will enjoy later in the day. Reminder that the two person teams must remain within eyesight of each other at all times!
The second leg involves a bike ride about 6 miles to Paris Park along the Riverwalk and the longest linear park in Michigan, the White Pine Trail. This can be completed with a road bike or mountain bike and is paved the entire route. You will need to take care not to run over fellow competitors as they make their way back to pick up their bikes and maybe a few other pedestrians enjoying the trail. You must wear your bike helmet the entire ride or you will be disqualified and thrown to the wolves. For the 3 or 4 person relay participants the 2nd leg is done by your best biker and they can not leave the bike coral area at the Middle School until their running partner touches their hand. Also for all bikers you must walk your bike across the 1st bridge by the middle school.
The third leg begins upon entering Paris Park. Canoeing along the mighty Muskegon now begins for about1 to 1.5 hours to Northend park. Please keep your eyes open for the eagles, ducks, turtles, fox, and deer that will be cheering you on. Canoes will be provided along with life jackets. Life jackets are mandatory and you will be disqualified if you do not put them on and buckle them. If you want to bring your own canoe you can do this but you will be responsible for transportation.
Completion of the event this year is a little different. You will be landing your canoe at Northend Park and the canoers will then be responsible for sprinting back to the Middle School along the Riverwalk to cross the finish line. If your relay teammates want to meet you at Northend Park they are encouraged to complete the trek with you.
Other good information! The bikes will be dropped off at Paris Park in a designated area (one area for self transportation and the other area for us commoners to bring you bike back to the middle school). There is also transportation available for relay teams that have members stranded in Paris Park or individuals who need to be brought to Paris park to await their partners. There will be HAM radio individuals along the course monitoring your progress and Search and Rescue will be nearby to ensure your safety.
